Tornado Warnings Send People Scrambling

November 22, 2014

(Undated)– Volatile weather late this (Saturday) afternoon sent some people in the region scrambling for shelter.

Tornado sirens went off in Spirit Lake for a tornado warning that was issued after funnel clouds were reported north of Orleans and west of Spirit Lake. No touchdowns were reported.

It was different though in southeastern Clay county where there were two reports of brief tornado touchdowns south and southeast of Dickens and Gillett Grove. The rope tornados touched down in open fields and no damage was reported.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service say the storms were the result of warmer air at the surface being lifted into very cold, unstable air a few thousand feet aloft.
