There Are Some Important Things To Keep In Mind For June 7th Primary Election

May 16, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– We have some important reminders to pass along regarding the upcoming June 7th primary election. Jordan Moyer oversees elections at the Dickinson County Auditor’s Office. She reminds everyone that because it’s a primary, you will need to declare a party. She says you’ll be able to do that at the polling location…

“So when they go there they will actually ask if they are voting Republican or Democrat so that way they’ll be able to pull that ballot. If you do decide to absentee vote, which starts May 18th, you’ll be able to choose either Republican or Democrat on there as well if you are currently a no-party. The last day to request a ballot by mail is May 23rd and the last day to vote in the office is June 6th. And just a reminder as well that the ballot must be in our office by 8:00 pm on election day, so make sure if you do request one by mail you do get that in right away.”

Moyer says there will NOT be a drop box. Absentee ballots will need to be returned by mail or in person to the Auditor’s Office. Moyer also has this reminder for anyone who currently isn’t registered to vote that would like to cast a ballot in the primary…

“So the last day to register to vote is May 23rd as well. If you do go to the driver’s license or register online any time after the 23rd, you will need to provide proof of identity as well as residency in order for us to register you. I will not process any voters that do decide to go online or register to vote in the driver’s license.”

She adds you’ll need to have the proper identification with you when you register…

“Just remember that you do need to have proof of identity and proof of residency. And because of it being a re-districting and re-precincting year, your voting location has most likely changed. You can go on to our website under elections and click the link. That will bring you to the Secretary of State’s website. Put your zip code in there to see where you will vote.”

Moyer also says you should be aware of mass mailings you likely will be getting in the mail…

“I just want to let people know these are not from your Auditor’s Office. They are mailed from political parties and private organizations that have a return address on them. So if you do not receive one in the mail, you do need to request an absentee ballot by printing a request on our website or call our office if you are unable to print if you do want that mailed to you. Otherwise we have the absentee request forms in our office when you came to vote in person between May 18th and June 6th.”

Polls for the June 7th primary election will be open from 7:00 am until 8:00 pm.
