(Sherburn, Mn.)– Investigators in Martin County, Minnesota are asking the state to test a DNA sample in hopes of solving a nearly 50-year-old murder case. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the shooting of JoAnn Bontjes, a 21-year-old who was found dead in a ditch near Sherburn in 1975. A vehicle she had been in was found nearby, unattended. Authorities determined Bontjes died of a gunshot wound.
The sheriff’s office announced Thursday it has submitted a previously unknown genetic sample to the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Investigators say the sample was found at the scene of the murder. They hope the DNA might help identify a suspect in the case.
