(Arnolds Park)-The Okoboji Rocks Concert Series will continue with The Upson Downs reuniting Friday night. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association will present The Upson Downs at The Roof Garden Ballroom August 25.
Founding member Rusty Davis recalls how the popular group got started. “The original Upson Downs came off a group called The Swingin’ Lads that did four Dean Martin shows and two Ed Sullivan shows. They hired me, and I suggested right away to bring Terry Klein into the group because he’s just an incredible talent. That started, I think, in about 1970, and then, from there on for 18 years, The Upson Downs continued on.”
He adds that they’ve assembled a large group of musicians for the show. “Tyler Pederson, the Band Director from Spirit Lake and also, his Dad will be playing drums. Kevin King, and then we have six horns. We have put together. A couple from the Lakes Area and Sioux City and we even have some Spirit Lake High School Seniors and Juniors that are filling out the section. It’s gonna be terrific, it’s gonna have a big sound.”
He notes that they look forward to seeing fans at the show. “You never know, when we get on stage we have so much fun that sometimes we just get carried away! Of course, we both know Okoboji and a lot of people.”
The concert will start at 7:30 Friday night at the Roof Garden Ballroom.
