The Flooding In Clay County Has Turned Deadly

June 24, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– There is now a fatality to report with the flooding in Clay county.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says the Communications Center received a call of a pickup that was seen trying to cross rapid flood waters Saturday in the 3400 mile of 240th Avenue, or the East Beltway on the east edge of Spencer. Authorities learned the pickup was occupied by a male identified as William Schultze of Elburn, Illinois and that the pickup had been swept away in the Little Sioux River. A witness told authorities the vehicle floated out of sight and disappeared to the east. An extensive search of that area was ensued by a number of agencies. The pickup was found later in a tree line and it was determined Schultze was deceased. Recovery efforts were attempted but had to be called off due to the very dangerous conditions. Earlier today (Monday), authorities were able to recover the victim.

Authorities say Schultze had been reported missing by officials in Illinois two days ago.
