Taxation Letters About To Hit Mailboxes

March 19, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Property taxpayers across Iowa are receiving notifications in the mail from their local County Auditor about tax rates. It’s the first time such notices have been sent and is the result of a recent change in state law. Dickinson County Auditor Lori Pedersen says it will include information on proposed city, school district and county budgets but does not include proposed budgets for smaller taxing authorities…

“They’ll also say based on like $100,000 value what your property taxes, the impact it might have and if it’s going to be an increase or decrease, but people have to realize this is not a tax, a property tax statement, this is informational only. A lot of levies aren’t included yet like your assessor, your county hospital, anybody that’s in a township will not have a listing on there because they were not part of this bill and this informational tax statement that’s going out.”

Pedersen points out that the actual impact of the tax rates on your property could be significantly different than the examples in the letter, which do not factor any recent changes in assessed value. Pedersen adds those who own more than one property may receive multiple letters if those properties are in different tax districts. She adds property tax payers in Dickinson county can expect to receive the correspondence in coming days…

“We sent it to our printer last Friday and he is working on them diligently. I’m guessing maybe by Wednesday people could maybe start seeing them in their mailbox.”

The letters will also include information on public hearings to be held by the various taxing entities prior to them adopting their budgets.
