(Des Moines)– The possible presence of blue-green algae has resulted in an advisory being posted for a beach on Big Spirit Lake.
Crandall’s Beach on Big Spirit Lake is one of five state-managed beaches currently under an advisory for algae blooms, which could be toxic to animals and make humans sick if they ingest water from the affected area.
Officials say high levels of nitrogen and phosphates are to blame.
Symptoms include breathing difficulties and a skin rash.
The Iowa Environmental Council says water with a bright blue or green colored tint, thick scum that looks like spilled paint or areas that smell bad should be avoided.
