(Spencer)– A sweepstakes phone scam is again making the rounds locally.
The latest reports of the scam are coming out of Clay county.
A resident there reported getting a phone call advising him he had won one and-a-half million dollars and that he needed to go to a Wal-Mart store to get a money order to send to them for 599-dollars for insurance purposes. The caller stated the so-called prize money would be sent once they received the “insurance” money.
Clay County Sheriff Randy Krukow says the whole thing is nothing but a scam and another attempt by criminals to try to get personal information from you. He encourages everyone not to give out such information. Instead, he says you should just hang up and contact your local law enforcement agency to report you received such a call.
