Supervisors Want Joint Meeting With P & Z On Proposed Revisions For Wind Turbines

February 13, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson County Supervisors also today (Tues.) held a public hearing on proposed recommendations from the Planning and Zoning Commission for revisions to conditional uses for the construction of any new wind turbines in the county. Some expressed opposition to any new wind turbines being put up at all, again calling for a moratorium. Others felt the revised setbacks being proposed aren’t adequate. Among those were Orleans Mayor Bill Maas. He says the current 1,600 foot setback from an occupied dwelling would curtail future growth of cities…

“Orleans, of course, is not known for its industrial development. We’re pretty much just a residential area. But if we decide to expand, which we have had several different things in the last five years, we would be limited if it’s limited to just 1,600 feet outside of city limits. I guess I would encourage you to consider going further. In our discussion we talked about can we impose, on someone else that has property outside of our city, and, you know, there was come reservations about that.”

Milford Mayor Steve Anderson expressed similar concerns.

Following some further discussion, with Supervisor Tim Fairchild abstaining, a motion was passed for the supervisors to meet in a joint session with the Planning and Zoning Commission to further address some of the concerns. That meeting is set for 1:00 pm Tuesday, February 20th.
