Substantial Rain Prompts Flood Warning On Little Sioux River

May 15, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Lake Park)– A flood warning has been issued for the Little Sioux River in Clay and Dickinson counties after heavy amounts of rain fell across the region over the weekend. Many locations reported anywhere from 2 to nearly 4 inches of rain since Friday. Amounts were even greater in the southeastern fringe of the listening area, where portions of Palo Alto and Pocahontas counties had reports of 5 to 7 inches in some locations, with basement flooding reported.

The flood warning for the Little Sioux River remains in effect until early Wednesday. Only minor flooding of some low lying pasture ground has been reported so far along the river west of Milford. Forecasters say it’s expected to start dropping later today (Mon.) or tonight.

A number of tornado warnings were issued Saturday evening for those same locations, as well as Buena Vista county, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
