(Undated)– Subsoil moisture across a large part of northwest Iowa remains well below normal, in spite of all of the precipitation we received over the winter. Gentry Sorenson, a Field Agronomist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, says that’s based on data from their recently completed spring survey of subsoil moisture in the region. He says the levels range from about 2.29 inches ABOVE normal at Rossie, in Clay county, to a little more than 5 inches BELOW normal at Rolfe, in Pocahontas county.
Subsoil moisture at Spirit Lake is a little more than 3.25 inches below normal this spring. Estherville was 2.4 inches below normal; Sanborn was nearly 2.25 inches below normal and Sibley near an inch below normal.
About 4.5 inches of plant available moisture was measured at the monitoring site near Spirit Lake.
Experts say most of the moisture from the melting snow ran off, as the ground was still frozen.
