(Undated)– A line of thunderstorms that traversed northwest Iowa Sunday night brought heavy rain and damaging wind to some areas.
While the severe storms stayed south of the immediate area, the Iowa Great Lakes did get in on some strong wind on the back side of the thunderstorm complex.
Winds estimated at around 50 mph whipped through the lakes area around 11:30 p.m. A gust of 59 mph was reported six miles west of Spirit Lake, and a 58 mph gust was reported in Jackson shortly before midnight.
The storms also brought very heavy rain to parts of the region. Four and-a-half inches of rain fell in about an hour or so four miles south of Paullina; considerable flash flooding was reported in portions of Cherokee county, including the Marcus area where several county roads were reported under water. A pickup was even washed off a road south of Marcus.
Flash flooding was also reported in Buena Vista county, where a vehicle was washed off a road and into a ditch.
Trees and power lines were reported down in portions of Storm Lake.
Quieter, drier weather is on tap for the region the next couple of days, along with a warm-up the latter part of the week.
