(Spirit Lake)– Intense thunderstorms that moved through northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota this (Wed.) dumped very heavy amounts of rain in a very short time and in some cases, considerable amounts of pea to quarter-size hail.
KUOO received numerous reports of hail said to be several inches deep two to three miles east and southeast of Spirit Lake.
Pea-size hail fell at the KUOO studios along with an inch and-a-half of rain. Most if it came in less than a half-hour.
A second wave of storms between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. just missed the Iowa Great Lakes to the west/southwest. It resulted in a tornado warning being issued for portions of Clay, Dickinson, O’Brien and Osceola counties. National Weather Service doppler radar indicated a possible tornado in a very strong cell that moved through the Melvin, Hartley, Moneta, Everly and Royal areas. There were no confirmed reports of any touchdowns or damage.
Hail up to the size of golfballs was reported in some of those areas.
