October 02, 2025

(Storm Lake)– Police in Storm Lake have arrested a man wanted in a hit-and-run accident that left two bicyclists seriously injured.

Authorities say it happened around 1 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, in the 800 block of East 4th Street. Two Storm Lake men, ages 30 and 38, were riding westbound when they were struck from behind by a vehicle that fled the scene. Both victims sustained serious facial and upper body injuries and later sought treatment at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.

Investigators recovered vehicle debris, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed surveillance footage, identifying the suspect vehicle as a black 2016 GMC Sierra owned by 28-year-old Alexander Pizano Mendez of Storm Lake. On Friday, Sept. 26, police located and impounded the truck, then arrested Pizano Mendez later that evening in the 1200 block of East 7th Street.

He faces a Class D felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injuries. Pizano Mendez was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
