(Sioux City)– A Storm Lake man has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. 46-year-old Leonard Weimer was sentenced Thursday in federal court after having pled guilty back in January of this year.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Weimer had been previously convicted of multiple felony charges including terrorism for shooting at two law enforcement vehicles occupied by officers. Those charges prevented Weimer from possessing firearms or ammunition.
Evidence presented at a sentencing hearing indicated Weimer was in possession of seven guns, four of which were stolen in a burglary. Storm Lake police pulled over a vehicle driven by Weimer in April of last year resulting if them finding a small amount of methamphetamine and .22 caliber rifle that had been stolen from his ex-wife. Court documents indicate that on May 19th of last year, as part of a theft investigation, law enforcement found a stolen 12-gauge shotgun in a separate vehicle owned by Weimer. Officers then searched a residence belonging to Weimer’s ex-girlfriend, where he would stay at times. There, a .380 caliber handgun was recovered that was previously given by Weimer to his then nine-year-old son. Weimer’s ex-girlfriend later found four guns and 2,000 rounds of ammunition hidden behind a false wall where Weimer kept his belongings. Those items had been reported stolen from another person associated with Weimer.
