Steps Being Taken To Address Abandoned, Dilapidated House In Superior

February 08, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Superior)– Measures are being taken to address an abandoned house in Superior that has been a source of frustration for city and county officials. They say the residence at 205 8th Street has been abandoned for some 14 years and has become dilapidated and is a safety hazard. Property taxes on it are also delinquent. They say attempts at contacting the owner have been unsuccessful.

City officials, along with County Treasurer Kris Rowley, addressed the matter at Tuesday’s Dickinson County Board of Supervisors meeting. Rowley says numerous tax sale attempts on the property were unsuccessful, and that it was transferred to a county lien in June, 2022. Rowley says the city of Superior wants to demolish the structure but can’t do that unless it has ownership…

“The city and the county would need to negotiate what they’re willing to do to purchase that tax sale certificate and what the county is willing to maybe abate.”

Supervisors Tuesday indicated they would be in favor of abating the county’s share of taxes owed on the property of nearly $1,400. Rowley says there are some other procedural things that the city would need to do…

“If it does get assigned over to them, it’s like it starts all over again. They have to wait for 18 months before they can do a 90-day notice to all the people that have a vested interest in the property that would be legally able to redeem it. I don’t expect that to happen, but then after 90 days passes they would have to contact me and pay for the recording fees and for the $25 treasurer fee to proceed with the deed. And then I would deed it over to them and then it would be there’s to take the building off.”

The supervisors will consider taking formal action on the matter at their next meeting.
