Statewide Tornado Drill To Be Held Wednesday As Part Of Severe Weather Awareness Week In Iowa

March 24, 2026

(Spirit Lake)– Severe Weather Awareness Week continues through the end of the week in Iowa. Dickinson County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Ehret says one of the highlights will be the annual statewide tornado drill set for 10:00 am Wednesday…

“We will be activating the outdoor warning sirens at that time and this will be our weekly test but in this case with it being the statewide drill we’re going to let the sirens sound for the full three minutes, so it won’t be just a quick ramp up and wind down like we do typically on Wednesdays. This will be a full activation of the sirens. We will also be putting out some messaging through our Dickinson Alert System for a test tornado warning and we really just encourage everybody to participate in that drill whether you’re at home or at work. I know that some of the schools are going to be participating as well. Just a really good time to test that severe weather plan. When you test your plans you’re bound to find things that don’t quite work the way you want it to and that’s a good time to find those issues and you can then do whatever you need to do to fix them and make your plan even better for when the real deal happens.”

Ehret encourages anyone needing assistance in putting such a plan together to contact his office.
