(Spirit Lake)– The start of Winter Games weekend has been marred by a deadly snowmobile crash.
Spirit Lake police say officers were called around 11:00 p.m. Friday to a report of a crash involving a snowmobile on the north side of East Lake Okoboji at Isthmus Park.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police say it appears the driver was northbound on East Lake Okoboji when he collided with a tree.
The driver, who’s name has not been released pending notification of relatives, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Spirit Lake police say the crash remains under investigation.
Spirit Lake police were assisted by Lakes Regional Health Care ambulance and paramedics, Spirit Lake First Responders, the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.
