Stand Off Results In Charges Against Spencer Man

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A stand off Tuesday evening in Spencer resulted in charges against a Spencer man.

Spencer police say it started shortly after 7:00 p.m. when authorities responded to a disturbance at 525 East 12th Street involving a man with a 12 gauge shotgun who was threatening suicide.

Officers with the Special Emergency Response Team formed a perimeter around the scene and an ambulance and the fire department stood by as a precaution. Neighbors were told to stay inside.

About 15 minutes after the initial call, a family member was allowed to leave the residence.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., officers apprehended the suspect, identified as 46-year-old James Basler of Spencer. Authorities say Basler was wandering around the yard with a meat cleaver looking for officers. Basler was arrested without incident and no injuries were reported.

Basler was charged with terrorism, going armed with intent and interference with official acts while armed. He was booked into the Clay county jail.

Spencer police say the incident remains under investigation and that additional charges are possible.
