(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake woman is accused of stealing more than $10,000 worth of items from a rental unit she had been staying in. 62-year-old Heather Hopkins Smith Tappan was arrested Monday by police in Spencer on a warrant. She was charged with theft in the 1st degree, a class “C” felony. Tappan was booked into the Dickinson county jail on a $5,000 bond.

A criminal complaint filed by the Spirit Lake Police Department states that Tappan had been living in a fully furnished dwelling in Spirit Lake for several months and that several items were missing after she left. Those are identified in the complaint as furniture, decorations, kitchenware, collectable antiques, linens, and so on. The affidavit states that Tappan was allegedly seen on camera and by neighbors loading the items into a moving truck and moving them to an unknown location.

A preliminary hearing for Tappan is set for February 9th in Dickinson County District Court.
