(Spirit Lake)– Two levy referendums that were on the ballot Tuesday in the Spirit Lake school district have been defeated.
A Physical Plant and Equipment Levy was defeated–481 voted yes while 646 were opposed.
The PERL, or Public Education Recreation Levy, also failed. 450 were in favor while 681 were against.
The Physical Plant and Equipment Levy would have amounted to an additional dollar in taxation per one thousand dollars of assessed value. It would have generated an estimated 5.1 million dollars over it’s seven year life that would have been used for a variety of projects.
The Public Education Recreation Levy, or PERL, would have amounted to another 13 and-a-half cents per one thousand dollars of valuation. It would have generated an estimated 83-thousand dollars a year until voted off by the public. That money would have been used to pay for upkeep of the Sami Center and for playground maintenance.
