Spirit Lake Police Chief Issues Statement On School Board Decision To Arm Some Staff Members

August 25, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– We’re getting more reaction to a decision by the Spirit Lake School Board to arm some staff members. In a written statement released this (Thursday) morning, Spirit Lake Police Chief Shane Brevik says “The school district has the authority under Iowa law to authorize certain persons to possess firearms on school property and I’ve had some positive discussions with Dr. Smith about the district’s ideas for implementing a program to potentially allow some staff members to possess firearms and the reasons for doing so.”

Brevik continued by saying: “I think the concept has merit and I know that the district will be working closely with all local law enforcement agencies as the district’s plan is formulated over the coming weeks and months to keep us informed and to potentially consult. I look forward to participating as necessary in that process.”

As we reported previously Dickinson County Sheriff Greg Baloun was at Monday’s meeting and commended the board for taking the action.
