Spirit Lake Man Recognized For Years Of Service To IGL Sanitary District

January 25, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Milford)– A Spirit Lake man has been recognized for his many years of service with the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District. The district’s board of trustees adopted a resolution at this week’s meeting dedicating the flagpole at the Milford facility in honor of Bob Boettcher. Sanitary District Superintendent Steve Anderson says Boettcher’s service to the district goes all the way back to shortly after the entity was established…

“The history of the Sanitary District goes back to 1939 when the Iowa Conservation Commission actually ran the operations, which would be today’s Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Bob worked for them back in 1945 and he’s told us when he worked there he actually helped grade the roads out here and as past of his duties he was all over the state for the Conservation Commission but lived here. That’s one of the things he’s told us over the years that he’s helped with.”

Anderson says Boettcher also most recently served on the Sanitary District’s Board of Trustees…

“Bob had been a trustee here for 28 years. He retired in September. Most of that time he had been Vice President but the majority of his time that he was here he was actually the President of the Sanitary District Board here.”

The honor was bestowed upon Boettcher during Tuesday’s trustees meeting, the same day as Bob’s 100th birthday.

In addition to his work with the Sanitary District, Bob also is a World War II veteran and served previously on city councils in Orleans and Spirit Lake, and is a former Mayor of Spirit Lake.
