(Des Moines)– A Spirit Lake man was among four Iowans presented with the Governor’s Lifesaving Awards during a ceremony at the statehouse in Des Moines.
Kyle Peterson was given the Lifesaving with Valor Award for his actions on January 5th of this year when he rescued a couple after the UTV they had been riding on East Lake Okoboji went through the ice.
Peterson happened to be having dinner at the time at the Waterfront when he saw the incident took place, ran a half mile across the lake, took off his jacket and threw it to the woman, using it as a rope to pull her to safety. Once she was pulled to safety, Peterson did the same to the man, pulling him safely up onto the ice as well. Peterson then helped the couple walk about half mile back across the lake where they were checked over by emergency personnel.
