(Spencer)– An investigation by Spencer police into the theft of some scrap metal has resulted in the arrest of a Spirit Lake man.
Spencer police say it stems from a report on April 9th of a stolen trailer that was found parked behind a business in the 2000 block of Highway Boulevard in Spencer. Several barrels of stolen scrap metal were on the trailer.
Officers put surveillance cameras in the area along with GPS tracking device on the trailer. Police monitored movements of the trailer and on April 13th recovered it in the 900 block of East 7th Street.
Authorities recovered and returned to the rightful owners 1,500 pounds of scrap aluminum, a 1997 golf cart trailer and several industrial batteries.
31-year-old John Haisman of Spirit Lake was arrested and charged with theft in the second degree…a class “D” felony, and possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine. Haisman was booked into the Clay county jail.
Police say their investigation continues and that additional charges are expected.
