(Spirit Lake)– One lakes area city is thinking about tightening restrictions on door-to-door solicitors.
The issue was a topic of discussion at last week’s Spirit Lake city council meeting after hearing from city staff. They’re concerned that some in the community may be getting the impression the city is endorsing the merchandise because of a permit it issues to those conducting the door-to-door sales.
City staff say residents should NOT construe that as any endorsement whatsoever by the city. The permit simply gives permission to the person or firm to conduct the sales.
City officials say they’re also concerned about some people who are conducting the sales, as the current city code doesn’t give staff any authority to reject permit applications as long as the basic information is filled out.
They’re looking into the possibility of requiring background checks of applicants, along with the possibility of putting additional restrictions on who can receive a permit.
The matter has been referred to the City Attorney’s office for further review and possible recommendations.
