Spirit Lake City Administrator Mark Stevens is reminding residents that City Hall operations will relocate to temporary space beginning this Friday, August 9, 2013.
City Hall will be closed on that day for moving office equipment and furniture. Services will resume at the new location on Monday, August 12.
The new City Hall will be at 708 18th Street, at the intersection of Highways 9 and 71 in downtown Spirit Lake. The new location is behind Hoien Realty, about 1/2 block from the old City Hall.
The City Hall phone number will remain the same and mail addressed to the current Hill Avenue address will continue to be delivered.
Stevens said that the temporary location will remain convenient to the public to visit City Hall for services. Parking is on the west side of the building. A small meeting room will be used for committees and work sessions but City Council meetings will be held at another location.
The City Council will hold its August 13 meeting in the Community Room at the Public Library on 16th Street. Future meetings may be held at the Courthouse; subject to a decision by the City Council.
Stevens said that the old City Hall will undergo asbestos removal in late August and be demolished in September. City Hall will be in its temporary, rented location for about 12 months for construction of the new City Hall building. He said that the temporary building will be a tight space but the inconvenience will be worth it, “the new City Hall will be a big improvement for staff and the public for many years to come. “
Architects are working on plans for the new building. These plans will detail mechanical & electrical systems, room finishes, and other items. Cost-saving measures are being pursued to keep the project on budget. Once approved, the architects will prepare bidding documents. Construction of the new building should start in December.
