(Spencer)– City officials in Spencer announced this (Tues.) morning they have successfully raised the $500,000 in funding needed to construct a splash pad in the community. Another $700,000 for the project will come from Hotel/Motel tax revenue.
City officials had earlier thought about bringing a bond issue to a vote that would have included funding for the splash pad and a campground, but opted against that after last year’s flood.
Parks and Recreation Director Bob Fullhart expressed his appreciation to those who made the splash pad fundraising effort a success, along with those who donated…
“We’ve had great response to this out of the community. A lot of community members have really stepped up and helped us out to get this to where we’re at right now and really help us push this to reality of keeping everything on track and be looking at a start up of for a spring build on this project and really get rolling on things.”
Special thanks was also given to Spencer Municipal Utilities, another major donor for the project. General Manager Steve Pick says it fits in nicely with SMU’s mission statement and other projects they’ve partnered with the city on…
“We’ve partnered a lot on economic development projects, the Green Industrial Center, and a lot of housing projects, also, which is key to our community’s success. So this strong partnership between SMU and the city has really positioned our community for the future and we really view the splash pad exactly the same way. It’s a long term investment in our community and we’re also hopeful our participation financially leads to a successful project and also helps leverage some funding from the Community Attraction Grant that the city has applied for.”
The Spencer Municipal Utilities Family Splash Pad will open in 2027. A date for a groundbreaking hasn’t been set yet.
