Spencer Riverfront Project Awarded Vision Iowa Funding

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Some good news for the Little Sioux Riverfront and trails project in Spencer.

The Vision Iowa Board has awarded a $171,000 grant for the project, which has a total price tag of $901,323. Organizers were hoping to get $184,623.

The project includes a pedestrian boardwalk with a viewing area and other associated improvements to the riverfront; installation of a 140-foot-span, 10-foot-wide bridge connected to the city’s trails; and paving of nearly 1.3 miles of a 10-foot-wide recreational trail. The grant is contingent upon fundraising being completed in 90 days.

The grant announcement was one of three made Thursday by the Vision Iowa Board, which awarded $321,000 in grants in its latest round. Other projects awarded funding are in Osceola and Elkader.

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. To date, 362 awards have been granted by the board, totaling a little more than $137 million.
