(Spencer)– Extensive street flooding that took place a couple of weeks ago in Spencer during a heavy rain event is being addressed by that city’s Mayor. One of the hardest hit areas was in the vicinity of the South T. In an update, Mayor Steve Bomgaars says the city has previously done some work in that area to try to mitigate flooding, but he says more needs to be done…
“We have a couple of retention ponds, one on the east side of the municipal golf course, one on the west side of the municipal golf course; we’ve enlarged that pond at the municipal golf course drainage area there to slow down the water that comes off the fields to the east. So that has definitely helped. Obviously the rain a couple of weeks ago was so hard, it came so hard and so fast that it couldn’t keep up with it and we did have some street flooding there. We also had some culvert projects there at the South T and to the east which has helped mitigate the flooding as well. So, you know, we continue to make strides in that area but it is a work in progress throughout the community.”
Bomgaars says a project separating storm and sanitary sewer lines mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources should also help mitigate street flooding in the future.
