(Sioux City)– A Spencer man has been sentenced to 48 months in jail for possessing stolen mail. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 37-year-old Tony Steece was sentenced last week.
Steece pled guilty in November of last year to three counts of possession of stolen mail. Evidence showed that on the morning of November 26th, 2020, Spencer police responded to a citizen’s complaint of someone stealing mail from a mailbox. Police responded and found Steece with his hand in the mailbox, telling officers he was returning the mail. Steece fled police when officers tried to arrest him on some outstanding warrants, leading them on a high speed pursuit through Spencer and outside city limits. Upon being apprehended, Steece admitted to officers he stole the mail. Police found a number of other pieces of mail as Steece was taken into custody.
The case was investigated by the Clay and Dickinson County Sheriff’s Offices, the Spencer Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Steece is in the custody of a U.S. Marshal pending transport to a federal prison.
