Spencer Man Sentenced On Federal Meth Charge

(Sioux City)– A Spencer man who conspired to distribute methamphetamine has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison.

52-year-old Robert Mears was sentenced Friday after previously pleading guilty to conspiring to distribute methamphetamine.

Mears admitted to being involved in a conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of pure meth in the Spencer area from March 2011 through August 2011. According to court documents, Mears also distributed more than 30 grams of pure meth to informants on two occasions in June of last year.

In addition to the jail time, Mears must also serve a 5-year term of supervised release and was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.

Mears is being held in the custody of a U.S. Marshal pending transport to a federal prison.

The case was investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Iowa Great Lakes Drug Task Force, Division of Criminal Investigations, the Spencer Police Department and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
