Spencer Gears Up For Flagfest This Weekend

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)—The annual Flagfest celebration kicks off tomorrow (Fri.) and continues through Sunday in Spencer. A full slate of events will be on tap, however Bill Campbell of the Spencer Chamber of Commerce says all of the recent rain we’ve received has forced them to scrap one of them…Sunday’s River Float…(click here for comment.)

“Because of the high river levels and the debris that is within the river it’s just not safe for the folks to be floating down the river, so we’re going to have to do away with the river float this year but we have high hopes that next year spring will be a bit more favorable to us and we’ll try it again.”

Campbell says they’ll kick off the weekend with a big dance tomorrow (Fri.) evening at the Varied Industries Building at the Clay County Fairgrounds…(click here for comment.) “We were able to attain a really high calibre band to bring to the Flagfest dance so 76 Juliet right out of Milwaukee is going to be joining us that night and I think there’s about eight members of that group if I remember right.”

One of the big highlights of the weekend is the annual Flagfest Parade which begins at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. The lineup gets underway at 8:00 a.m. at the Clay County Fairgrounds.

A major change this year according to Campbell is in the location of the inflatables…which will be moved the fairgrounds…(click here for comment.) “Number one, there was absolutely no shade in the downtown area. And we did it on that east 7th Street because we were less of a nuisance to any neighbors or anybody that we were around so that’s why we picked that location originally. But it’s too hot to have those inflatables sitting on the city streets and there was just, like we said, no shade, electrical concerns. So again by moving it to the fairgrounds all of those problems were alleviated because we’re going to be on a grassy area, there is ample electricity…we don’t have to do anything special for that; we have the bathroom facilities that are right there; so it lends itself. And you know we’re lucky enough in this community to have the Clay County Fairgrounds so why not use the facilities at hand. And the good thing is by doing this if it does happen to rain Saturday the fairgrounds is offering us a plan B. So regardless of the weather the inflatables will be up and we’re going to have a good time for the kids.”

Campbell adds there will be various exhibits and events going on throughout the community all weekend.
