Spencer Gearing Up For Flagfest This Weekend

June 08, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Flagfest will be taking place this weekend in Spencer. Blake Goss of the Spencer Chamber of Commerce says things will get started Friday…

“We’ll kick it off with the Tail Twisters Golf Tournament. That starts at 12:00 pm at Spencer Golf and Country Club. And then that evening we’re going to go into What The Truck Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at Riverview Park. The kids pedal pull will also be taking place during that time. And then after that winds down we’ll move over to North School Park for Movie In The Park that evening.”

Saturday’s events include a 5K run and walk along with the parade. Sheriffa Jones of the Spencer Chamber says it looks to be another big parade…

“We’re at about 120 entries so it’s looking really great. If there’s anybody that, you know, obviously still wanting to get into the parade they can, we just can’t guarantee what might be said about you or your entry, but yeah, the parade’s looking really good and of course it all happens just due to the help of so many volunteers as well as all of our various and wonderful sponsors as well.”

Inflatables will be set up at Fairview Park following Saturday’s parade…

“This year we really wanted to have a focus on the parks in Spencer. We have so many great, beautiful parks that are nicely shaded. Almost all of them have playground equipment as well, so this year Fairview Park is going to be the place to be. Our High Noon Kiwanis will be there with their cookie buckets as well and beverages so the great thing is that you’re going to be able to go visit any of our restaurants in the morning for lunch or the evening for dinner and let the High Noon Kiwanis take care of your sweet tooth. So another addition is the Imagination Library, it’s called Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. They’re going to be doing some tie dying activities there at Fairview Park for kids. So this is information that’s not on some of the flyers so you just want to be sure to check out our website and our social media pages, but that’s an opportunity for kids. A pretty minimal cost but a great opportunity to do a fun activity as well.”

Jones says an event that was new last year, Bourbon and Bags, is coming back this year…

“Century Farms is bringing that back by popular demand. They would like you to pre-register by going to their social media page or their website, but check out Century Farms for the Bourbon and Bags event up there. It’s a great event, a fun activity, fun atmosphere. Just adds to the variety and really trying to have something for people of all ages, so. Yeah, that will be happening in the evening along with Grand Cruise and the Christian Motorcycle Association will also be downtown on West 5th. Saturday we do wrap up with The Chill, that’s at 513 Bar and dirty champagne. Coming back to town is Angela Bohnenkamp. She’s a Spencer native and it’s her band that’s coming back from Des Moines.”

Sunday’s events for Flagfest include homemade cardboard boat races; free family swimming at the Aquatic Center; an open house at the Parker Historical Museum; and the municipal band concert at East Leech Park. A full schedule of events can be found at Spencer Iowa Chamber-dot-org.
