Spencer Fire/Rescue Awarded Grant To Purchase Some Special Equipment

January 04, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Spencer Fire & Rescue has been awarded a grant to purchase a device that detects the amount of anhydrous ammonia that’s in the air. Chief Jesse Coulson says they received a $3,000 grant for the equipment…

“CF Industries does supply, they have a grant funding, they have a dollar amount that they give out to communities that apply for it. We applied for it and we actually contract with them so that if they have an incident we actually are their response along with Fostoria and Everly or any other department. And for the ones who aren’t aware, they do anhydrous ammonia and they do a lot, it’s a terminal there. What we found out was we have personal detectors but we don’t have a meter or detector for anhydrous ammonia, so when you respond to an incident like that, that’s critical. You want to know what you’re getting into, especially if you can’t see it.”

Coulson says they’ll also be purchasing some items to assist in calibrating the new device.
