(Spencer)– The Spencer City Council Monday voted to proceed with what likely will be the first of several phases of a study into a flood plain in the area of the city’s green industrial park.
The city has expressed concern over recent map updates from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that place most of that area into a flood zone. Councilman Bill Orrison says unless something is done to correct that, the designation could severely hinder any future development of that area…
“It’s quite obvious that FEMA is not using the information that we know is happening in Spencer. I made the comment I’ve lived close to that blue line for 46 years and I think Mark had one time we had barricades on 10th Avenue and they were there for a few hours and that was it. And that was in 46 years. So I just think it makes a whole lot of sense to make the first step and to me we’re probably going to go through two or three. Because one of the things we’ve got to realize is that all of that blue area is our green industrial park and we can’t do anything with that unless we get this thing figured out.”
City officials say this particular part of the study will cost roughly $5,000.
