Spencer City Council Holds 1st Reading On Proposed Speed Limit Reductions

April 18, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Some changes in speed limits are a step closer to happening in portions of Spencer. The City Council Monday evening held the first reading of some ordinance revisions that would allow the reductions. Police Chief Mark Warburton says its based on recommendations from a speed survey that was done in the affected areas, including near the Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School…

“And they suggested that that speed zone of 35 mph be continued on East 18th Street from 10th Avenue East to their east property line, so just east of the school, and then it will transition to the 45. Likewise when they were there they looked at 10th Avenue East from East 18th Street East Milwaukee and they determined that 10th Avenue East should be a 30 mph zone which is a reduction of five miles-per-hour in that area as well. The school zone will not be interfered with, that will still stay the 20 that’s flashing, otherwise it’s just dropping it down five miles-per-hour. I think it’s a very minimal impact. I don’t think the motorists will even see much of a difference in that area. Now on 11th Street Southwest, that is a reduction of five miles-per-hour there, so from the South T on Highway 71, from there to 11th Avenue Southwest will become a 40 mph zone instead of the current 45.”

The revisions still need to go through second and third readings before being considered for final adoption by the council.
