Spencer City Council Hears Updates On Construction Projects; Awards Bid For North Y Turn Lane

March 05, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– The Spencer City Council Monday evening heard an update on several upcoming construction projects. Planning Director Adam Syverson provided the details…

“We’ve put out some tentative dates. A spring construction date for Dollar General out north of town, the five acres north of Schoeneman’s; June construction start date, late June, for Kwik Star; anticipated spring/summer for the spec building on the west side of town.”

On another topic, Syverson says his office has been making some progress recently in dealing with dilapidated and substandard housing issues in Spencer…

“With staff persistence and cooperation from occupants and landlords, staff is seeing improvements, demolitions, complete renovations and land sales on approximately 70 percent of suspected vacant, dilapidate and substandard homes. These numbers are pulled from the first two rounds of inquiries which totals approximately 19 properties.”

In other business, the Spencer City Council awarded a bid for the construction of a turn lane on Highway 18 at 42nd Street. The low bid of $357,532 was submitted by DeLoss Construction, coming in nearly $100 under the engineer’s estimate. The project has a completion deadline of October 15th but an engineer told the council it likely will be done much earlier than that.
