Spencer City Council Considers Zoning Amendments

December 03, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– The Spencer City Council Monday evening held a public hearing on a proposed zoning amendment that would allow accessory dwellings as permitted structures in the “B” Multiple Residential Zoning District and as Special Exception Uses in the “A” Residential District. City Planner Adam Severson says the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission met several times on the proposal and is recommending approval by the council…

“As accessory structures are constructed, in theory they add valuation to property as well as assessed value and have the potential to increase surrounding property values. Staff views this as a creative way to boost housing stock, disaster recovery housing stock, assisting aging generations on affordable solutions to being closer to family or family members that require assistance. Staff recommends this as presented.”

There were no public comments at last (Mon.) evening’s meeting and the council approved the first reading of the proposed change.

The council also held a public hearing and approved the 1st reading of another proposed zoning change that would add “funeral services” as a permitted use in the C-2 Highway Commercial District.
