Spencer City Council Approves Sale Of Two City-Owned Lots To NW Iowa Corridor Habitat For Humanity

November 07, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– The Spencer City Council Monday evening approved the sale of two city owned lots to the Northwest Iowa Corridor Habitat For Humanity. The action followed a public hearing that drew no comments. The lots previously had structures on them that were declared nuisances and were demolished by the city.

John Bjornstad, the new Executive Director for the local Habitat for Humanity group, told the council the organization plans to construct new homes on the lots to assist low income residents…

“You know we focus a lot on community engagement, partnerships with local builders, and then this is a sweat equity project so it’s not just a give out for families that really need this. It will give a very good opportunity for low income families to come in here and maybe have a house for the first time ever and that’s always a great feeling. I’m sure you’ve all had that.”

Councilman Brian Balk expressed his appreciation to the organization…

“I think this is a really great partnership to take care of some of these in-filled lots that we have in our community and I’m really excited and I hope that you and the Planning Department can continue to collaborate and hopefully we see more of this in the future.”

City officials say another benefit is the fact that those lots will once again be placed back on the tax roll.
