(Spencer)– A fire at a Spencer apartment building sent one person to the hospital and has left another temporarily without a home.
Spencer Fire Chief Doug Duncan says firefighters were called around 5:19 p.m. Wednesday to Spencer Manor Apartments at 503 East 19th Street in Spencer. Upon arriving firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the front of apartment number 22.
The renter, Angela Loomis, was home at the time and managed to get out.
Firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack and stopped the fire as it was spreading into the attic. The blaze was contained to the one apartment.
Three other apartments in the four-plex were evacuated as a precaution.
A resident in a neighboring apartment was taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The apartment where the fire was located has been deemed uninhabitable for now; residents in the other three units were allowed to return.
An investigation determine the fire was the result of some grease that ignited on a stove. The blaze spread to the top of some cupboards and into the ceiling and attic.
Spencer firefighters were on the scene about two hours.
Damage was estimated at 10-thousand dollars.
