Soybean Harvest Kicking Into High Gear

September 28, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Lakefield, Mn.)– The soybean harvest is kicking into high gear across the area. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says combines are rolling now in a lot of fields and he says moisture levels are dropping…

“Well moisture, it’s actually drying up pretty good. I think, you know, you get to mid to later afternoons and a lot of these beans are getting down to 10, 11 percent, you know, and earlier on they’re probably, you know, 12, 13. But those are all good moisture levels. I am concerned, and we’ll probably get some beans below, in that single digit numbers and stuff so then we have a little more shatter loss and lose a little bit of weight, but right now, you know, there’s a lot of green stems and a lot of these beans are still kind of yellow and a little bit of leaves on them, so we’ve just got to be patient with them but most generally, you know, the beans are relatively dry and, you know, we’ve got yields all over the board and but I think they’re coming in maybe just a little bit better than what we expected.”

Nesseth says very little of the corn has come out so far as moisture levels are still too high…

“Most of that corn right now is around 30 percent or better and there’s some that got into the 20’s. It just depends on the maturity and date of planting but there’s just not a real, a lot of later corn was planted and so I think the standability is good, the ear retention seems to be good, so the producers are going to take, just concentrate on the soybean harvest, I think, and let that corn dry out naturally in the field.”

Weather conditions for that to occur should be ideal over the next week or so, with warmer temperatures, no rain, and low humidity expected.
