Some Restoration Work Is Now Underway At Abbie Gardner Cabin

October 28, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Arnolds Park)– Work got underway today (Mon.) on some restoration work at the Abbie Gardner cabin in Arnolds Park. Drew Hage of the Spirit of Okoboji, which is assisting Friends of the Abbie Gardner Cabin, tells KUOO news this part of the project involves replacement of the roof…

“About two years ago the Friends of the Abbie Gardner Cabin group, they worked with RDG to do an assessment of the property. That’s a professional firm looking at the existing conditions, identifying things that could be addressed to preserve the cabin which is one of the goals of the Friends of the Abbie Gardner Cabin group. Definitely wanted to work on getting that roof maintained or updated and, you know, definitely doing that to historic standards. So they got that assessment to the state. The state, after a couple of years of planning then, was able to get the project green-lit.”

Hage says they’ll also be working on some other restoration efforts outlined in the report…

“There’s some drainage issues around the cabin that still need to be addressed. The existing museum is not able to have artwork in it year-round because it’s not climate controlled. There’s also room limitations in the existing museum, so there’s a lot of things that need to be addressed with the museum and we’re going to get that to that next level, and that’s something you can share with the state and see what progress we can make there.”

Hage says the roof project should be complete in a couple of weeks.
