Some Area Cities Revising Fireworks Ordinances To Comply With New State Law

June 17, 2025

(Spencer)– Cities in Iowa that used to prohibit the use of fireworks in their communities altogether are having to make some changes to their ordinances as a result of a bill passed in the last session of the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds. It states that fireworks must be allowed to be shot off July 3rd and 4th and December 31st. The city of Spencer is among those having to make the change. City Manager Kevin Robinson says they have no choice…but to comply with the new law…

“We do not agree with it. We do not believe that falls within the home rule charter in the state of Iowa, but none-the-less we need to update our ordinance to be in line with the state of Iowa. So the easy way to think about this is any firework that you can buy from a legal fireworks stand within the state of Iowa, you can reasonably expect to be discharged within city limits July 3rd, 4th and December 31st.”

The council approved the first filing and waived the second and third and gave final adoption to the revision Monday evening. Councilman Ron Hanson says he hopes those shooting off fireworks will be respectful of their neighbors.
