So-Called

(Primghar)– The so-called “grandparent scam” is once again being reported in the area.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office says it recently received a report of it from a citizen in that county who received a phone call stating that a grandson was in trouble and needed money right away. The caller purported to be an attorney for the grandson and told the person on the other end of the line they needed to wire money right away.

In this case, authorities say the person who received the call fell victim and wired the money in more than one call. The victim lost more than $9,000.

Authorities say under no circumstance should you send money right away in the event you receive a call such as this. They recommend you first do some research. They say you should first check to see if the person in question is actually in trouble and to check on their actual whereabouts.

Anyone receiving such calls should report them to their local law enforcement agency.
