(Spirit Lake)– For the first winter in a couple of years, the Dickinson County recreational trails are seeing a lot of activity. Erin Reed of Dickinson County Trails tells KUOO news snowmobiles are allowed on the trails, adding they work in close cooperation with the Dickinson County Snow Hawks snowmobile club…
“We’ve always shared a lot of space with the Snow Hawks because, of course, we have a lot of trails in Dickinson county that are in D.O.T right-of-way and county road right-of-way where they already have snowmobile trails. So just keep in mind where those trails are located. They do take the time, they have volunteers that groom those trails and if you get ATV’s on there it disrupts the grooming process and hurts that. You know, there’s only so many months of the year and if we have snow, like the last couple of years where we didn’t, there’s only so much time they have to enjoy those spaces so we ask that ATV’s stay off of them. And in general, all of our trails do not allow any ATV’s or UTV’s on them.”
Reed adds there are some trail segments specially designated for cross country skiing as well…
“The Brooks Golf Course to the Nature Center, you can start at either place, the club house or the Nature Center, there’s a really lovely trail that’s groomed there. So far there’s a couple of miles, they’re looking to expand that. You can ski out at Kettleson-Hogsback. They’re not grooming that yet. We’re waiting for hunting season to get over with which is mid-January. So watch yourself out there and be mindful of hunters out in that area. But a couple of lovely places to ski.”
Reed requests everyone be mindful of the shared uses and to be on the lookout for each other.
