(Undated)– Iowa’s school children shouldn’t believe the mounting number of snow days won’t be made up sometime during the school year.
State law mandates schools must be in session at least 180 days an academic year. That means the last day of classes for students in the Estherville-Lincoln Central School District is now scheduled for June 1st.
Estherville, like other districts, makes up school days missed because of bad weather at the end of the year. State law allows make-up sessions on weekends. But Education Department spokeswoman Elaine Watkins-Miller says she is unaware of districts taking that approach this year.
Armstrong-Ringsted Superintendent Randy Collins says he is worried because it’s still early in the winter. The district has six days to make up as of Thursday. Collins says he expects more snow days this school year.
