Snow Days Are Piling Up As Fast As The Snow Itself For Some Area Schools

January 05, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Days missed due to snow are quickly adding up for a number of area schools…and it’s only early January.

In the Spencer Community School District, Superintendent Terry Heman says today (Wednesday) marked the 6th snow day for that district. In an email to district patrons, Heman says that’s well above what they see at this point in a typical school year.

Heman goes on to say the decision to call off classes is never an easy one. He says they work closely to balance safety with minimizing disruptions for students and families. He says the safety factors that go into consideration include weather forecasts, the wind chill factor and road conditions.

Heman adds it’s too early yet to say whether or not any days will need to be made up at the end of the school year. He says that’s because the school year is based on instructional hours, rather than days.
