(Spencer)– Spencer Municipal Utilities has received national recognition for exceptional electric reliability in 2023. It comes from the American Public Power Association, a trade group representing 2,000 not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities. The group subscribes to a tracking service that monitors outage and restoration data. That information is then compared to national statistics from the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all types of utilities.
SMU’s average duration of an electric disruption is 20.56 minutes, compared to other utilities in the region which average 46.77 minutes.
Officials with SMU attribute the increased reliability to the fact that 97 percent of their electric system is now underground.
