Smoke From Canadian Wildfires Is Impacting The Region

May 17, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Thick smoke from canadian wildfires is obscuring the sky over northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota, and forecasters say it could stick around through the next several days.

The smoke is high in the atmosphere, so experts say it is not having an impact on air quality at the surface. However the smoke aloft is thick enough to where it is just about completely obscuring the sun.

Forecasters say the smoke will continue to linger until there’s a change in wind direction aloft. The winds higher up currently are out of the northwest, allowing the smoke to make it’s way into the region.
